After many years as a student at Slater Music School (SMS), Ben’s musical achievements to date have culminated in successful completion of a Foundation Degree in Music Performance at Swindon Academy of Music and Sound (Merit Classification).
Both during and since completing the degree study, he continues to receive ongoing private tuition with SMS, currently studying music theory and guitar. Ben achieved a Drums Grade 8 distinction (91% in 2016) and Drums Grade 6 distinction (96% in 2015, one of the highest marks in the UK). This also follows distinctions at Level 1 and 2 (i.e. up to Grade 5).
Ben's passion for music began at an early age, securing his first drum kit aged 5, and he has since maintained a consistent development both academically and as a performer. He has successfully performed at a number of venues and events including Pewsey Music Festival, where he achieved first place in the battle of the bands (this resulted in a performance on the main stage), Marlborough Jazz Festival (including representing St Johns School in the opening ceremony) together with a collection of songs in other public venues playing guitar and vocals. Ben has previously played drums and backing vocals in the college band ‘clairvoyance’ which focused on own composition work and covers in various venues in the Swindon area.
It has been an easy transition for Ben to move into teaching. An educator by nature, he has successfully completed his instrument specialist teacher training with SMS, and since consolidated his position as drum tutor.
He currently teaches at Bishops Canning’s, Marlborough St Mary’s, Woodborough Primary, Collingbourne Primary, St Johns Academy, and has numerous students each week in our afterschool private sessions at St Johns.
