Trainee Drum and Guitar Tutor

Please reload

With a focus on guitar and drums, Joe has been a student at Slater Music School (SMS) since his Y7 arrival at Marlborough's St Johns Academy. He started his musical career as a guitarist (aged 8), drummer (aged 12), then a bassist (aged 14) and now aged 17, a strong player at advanced level. He has achieved a distinction in all his music exams to date up to and including Grade 6 drums (July 2018), Grade 8 studies have commenced.

In addition to drums and guitar, Joe also takes private tuition with SMS in music theory, focusing on Music Notation, Music harmony, Band Knowledge and Band Analysis, developing his understanding of multi-instrument outcomes and practical application as a multi-instrument player himself. He is taking particular interest in  developing his advanced drum techniques, technical awareness and stylistic range.

Joe also studies a formal Level 3 Extended Diploma at the Academy of Music & Sound in Swindon.

Current initiatives include working towards higher grade exams to give more academic rigour to his 9 years playing to date, plus diversifying into acoustic guitar. This will give our students drums, electric & acoustic guitar options from Joe, initially for beginner and intermediate learners, each instrument has separate grades, content and repertoire.

In terms of performance, Joe has played at numerous school and local events including Marlborough Jazz Festival, Buckfest and the St Johns School Stedman Cup, at the latter of which he was awarded a 'highly commended' prize. He performs as a drummer with the Military Big Band as well as jazz bands plus regular performances in the south of England with his band “Basement Club”. These include appearances at profiled regional venues for example  Fleece and Firkin in Bristol.

We welcome Joe on board as a trainee drum and guitar tutor, delighted he has opted to make this move into music education. He is currently undertaking a teacher training programme with us and is available for half price lessons as he conducts his training.
